Figure 12-1. A crowded test tube (foreground) indicates that it is past time to transfer the plantlets. Ideally, plantlets are transferred before they become overgrown.

Saving on media chemicals by buying inferior quality is not a wise practice because it will have a high impact on plant performance for a relatively small percentage savings. Most often, the extra cost of buying quality chemicals and supplies will pay off in the long term.

A tissue culture operation offers savings in space compared to a conventional nursery operation. Less space is required to carry stock plants, to start plants, and to multiply them. With careful scheduling of laboratory and growing-on space, the grower need allocate fewer dollars to space and will realize a higher return on the dollars invested in land and buildings.

Deciding What to Grow

When contemplating a product mix, an obvious first step is to identify plants that respond to micropropagation. Section Two of this book includes tissue culture protocols for a number of species. Additional resources are available in the form of journal articles. Online and searchable journals such as In vitro, HortScience, and Journal of the American Society of Horticultural Science hold countless articles detailing micropropagation procedures that have proved successful for the authors. However, many “recipes” are top secret; once a company’s R&D cracks the code, that information often becomes proprietary and is not made public. One of the best resources for those interested in propagation of any form is the International Plant Propagators’ Society. Members have access to proceedings (papers presented by scientists and commercial propagators at IPPS conferences the world over), including a veritable treasure trove of micropropagation protocols.
